How To Stay Positive During Your Job Search

For many, job searching can be challenging and stressful. Not only is there pressure to land a job that is a good fit, but it can be hard to stay motivated and optimistic if you don’t see results right away. During challenging times, when the economy is facing a downturn, this is especially true.

While patience is key, positivity is equally as important. In order to avoid feeling discouraged, here’s how to stay positive during your job search:

Have a set amount of jobs you apply to each day

Throughout your search, you may feel pressure to apply to every job you fit the requirements for, and maybe some you don’t. It may make sense that the more roles you apply to, the more likely you are to receive an invitation to an interview. However, mass applying to jobs can work against you. 

Given the amount of job-seeker competition during uncertain times, and to avoid burnout, you’ll want to be selective with your time and spend it applying to jobs you know you’ll be the right fit for. This way you can give those roles your undivided attention when applying, and be sure to put in the effort to tailor your resume and cover letter if applicable. Having a defined number of jobs that you apply to each day will help ease your stress and keep your daily motivation up. It will also help you be more selective about the roles you will devote your time applying to.

Tap into your network

During your job search, you may mistakenly limit yourself to only searching for jobs online. However, there are roles that are filled solely based on referrals. Along with keeping your eyes peeled for postings, in order to expedite your search, you should consider reaching out to your network to see if anyone they know is hiring. While it can be intimidating to ask others for help, most people are more than happy to point you in the right direction. Even if they can’t help you find a job right away, they may be able to set up an informational interview for you so that when a job does come up, you’ll be top of mind for the role!

Take breaks

Applying to jobs can feel like a full-time job in and of itself. Because of this, it’s critical that you schedule breaks throughout the day in order to avoid burnout and practice a little self-care. To clear your head, consider taking a walk or heading over to your local coffee shop, or just give yourself 15 minutes away from your computer to allow some time to decompress.

Pursue hobbies or volunteer projects

Putting all of your energy and focus into your job search can quickly lead to burnout and unnecessary stress. To avoid this, consider breaking up the time by taking up a new hobby or volunteering with a charitable organization in your local area. Since a job search can have its many ups and downs, it’s important to have a creative outlet that will help you take your mind off your search! 

Don’t be afraid to ask for encouragement

During your job search, you may experience periods of low self-esteem and anxiety. If this happens, don’t be afraid to ask your friends or network for encouragement and advice! Job searching can feel lonely and isolating, but keep in mind that you’re not alone in this experience. Remember, just about everyone has been in the same position as you at some point in their career, so don’t be afraid to ask for a pep talk when you’re feeling down.
