Four Hard-Hitting Interview Questions Employers Need To Prepare For

Tandym Group

Interviewing is no longer a one-way street for employers. Candidates in the past typically asked simple interview questions about opportunities for professional development or the standard day-to-day, but they’re starting to dig deeper.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forever changed the workplace, and many job seekers are being more selective with career decisions as a result. According to our 2021 Hiring Outlook, more than 25% of professionals did not agree with the way their employer handled the crisis. With these evolving expectations, you can expect some more specific interview questions from candidates. If you’re caught off-guard or are unable to answer them effectively, this may raise some red flags about your company culture.

As a result, you should be prepared for some of these hard-hitting interview questions:

How has your organization handled the COVID-19 pandemic?

There’s no denying that every single company has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. While some organizations have been able to pivot, others have struggled. Either way, it’s important to be transparent about your company’s obstacles during this time. If your organization was able to excel, they’ll love to hear how stable your company is. If you had some growing pains, share your organization’s story, and provide any lessons the team has learned during this time.

At the same time, you should be willing to discuss new policies and safety protocols you have established due to COVID-19. From what happens when you have a confirmed positive case to your re-entry plan, this can make potential employees feel safer about working for your company.

Do you see your work environment evolving in the future? If so, how?

Most professionals (and employers) have learned many lessons during the pandemic. One major finding is that people working remotely are unlikely to be less productive than they’d be in an office setting. With that said, many job seekers will be interested in what you think about this topic. Have you adopted new work from home policies? How important is your physical office space? Are you providing staff with the proper tools and resources to successfully work from home? These are all questions you should aim to address when discussing the company’s evolving work environment.

How does the organization help employees feel connected to each other?

Whether your organization has gone fully remote, is back in the office, or has transitioned to a hybrid setting, candidates want to know how employees feel connected to their team and the company as a whole. As a result, understand what initiatives your organization has done to build this comradery—both in-person and virtually. Whether that be through new tech resources for remote work or happy hours with the team, you’ll want to showcase how you keep team morale high.

What types of wellness resources or services has your organization been able to provide your employees?

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a very difficult time for everyone. That’s why many candidates will want to know what types of resources your organization has been able to provide for those who may be struggling. Has your organization created new policies for working parents? Are there mental health resources for employees? Do your research to learn about the benefits that your organization has to offer during this tough time. Providing this insight during the interview will showcase how the organization supports its employees.
